Surveys

From time to time, BIMCO conducts surveys of members or the broader industry.

We also collaborate with other organisations to gather industry insights and inform regulatory developments.

Surveys currently open for submissions are listed here.

IBIA BIMCO Mass Flow Meter Survey

As a follow-up to the IBIA-BIMCO Survey in 2022, we invite you to participate in this new industry survey aimed at refining our understanding of Mass Flow Meter (MFM) Technology’s impact on quantity control, transparency and regulatory alignment.

The 2022 survey highlighted industry-wide challenges with fuel quality, quantity discrepancies, and the operational impacts of MFM adoption. Key findings indicated that while the introduction of MFM technology, especially in Singapore, has significantly reduced disputes over fuel quantity, concerns over fuel quality and its impact on machinery persist. The industry expressed strong support for wider MFM use and licensing schemes to improve transparency and reliability.

Since then, key ports such as Rotterdam, Antwerp, Sohar and Ceuta have moved forward towards mandating MFM usage.

This follow-up survey aims to assess progress, ongoing challenges and industry sentiment towards global MFM standardisation and related digitalisation efforts.

Your participation provides valuable input to support industry-wide improvements in bunkering standards, operational integrity, and sustainable practices.

Thank you for your continued engagement and feedback.

Ship's propellor

A Tripartite Working Group has been formed by representatives of shipowners and managers, IACS classification societies and European and Far East shipyards, to encourage the reduction of underwater radiated noise levels through voluntary measures. ICS and BIMCO kindly request participation in the Tripartite Working Group’s survey to assess the existing levels of uptake of the IMO guidelines.

Plastics 001

BIMCO has initiated a crew survey to address concerns regarding the provision of drinking water on ships. Many companies are seeking to move from single-use plastic bottles to advanced drinking water systems to reduce their plastic footprint. The survey aims to gather insights from crew members emphasising their crucial role in shaping effective waste management solutions and fostering a healthier maritime environment.

Seafarer Work Life Balance Survey

The World Maritime University (WMU) is calling all seafarers who are currently working on any commercial ship, or have worked on such ships during or after 2013, to participate in a survey on work-related aspects, psychological well-being, and career intentions.

WMU is conducting a survey in collaboration with the Officers’ Unions of International Seamen (OUIS). The insights gathered will help the maritime community to consider improvements.

The survey should take no more than 15 minutes to complete, and all responses will remain completely anonymous. You are welcome to share the survey link with seafarers in your network. The participation deadline is 30 June 2025.

Please do download the poster, print it and display it on board your ship or in your office in order to encourage seafarers to participate.
