“Threats to freedom of navigation affect both global trade and the people who keep it moving.”
That was the clear message from BIMCO Secretary General & CEO, David Loosley to Sagarmanthan: The Great Oceans Dialogue in New Delhi this week.
Conflict, attacks on shipping and trade disputes are making the operating environment increasingly complex. But the consequences go beyond commercial uncertainty.
“For most of us, the effects of geopolitical disruption are experienced primarily through higher costs. Seafarers – and their families – bear those consequences physically and emotionally,” David said.
He also welcomed India’s response, including Prime Minister Modi’s proposal for a shared BRICS distress and rescue network and the government’s “seafarer-first” initiative.
Some of the ways we at BIMCO support members and the industry are through advocacy, maritime-security guidance and war-risk clauses. We also work hard to make sure the essential role of seafarers is understood beyond our industry.
