Liquid cargo of the month October 2025 – Decyl Alcohol (All Isomers)

Published
14 October 2025

The BIMCO Liquid Cargo database is intended for use by for shore-side staff and to some extent for newcomers to the tanker trade and should only be used as a reference tool providing brief information regarding the more than 360 of the commonly transported liquid cargoes including Decyl Alcohol (All Isomers)

Trade name/synonym names:

Alcohol C10; 2-Propylheptan-1-ol; 1-Hydroxydecane; Alfol 10; Antak; Capric Alcohol; Caprinicalcohol; Conol 10N; Decanol; Epal 10; Nonylcarbinol; Royaltac; Sipol L 10; T 148; n-Decanol; n-Decyl Alcohol; 1-Decanol.

Main Properties

Decyl alcohol is a fatty alcohol with ten carbon atoms. Several isomers available. Obtain detailed cargo specifications from shipper.

Colourless, water-white viscous liquid; sweet orange like odour

Combustible.

Main chemical and physical properties

Flash point    > 80 deg. C

Boiling Points    Boiling point range 220 - 240 deg. C

Viscosity @ 20°C < 50 mPa.s

Vapour pressure @ 20°C    < 5 kPa (not suitable for ventilation)

Density varies with isomer - 828 kg/m3 @ 20 deg. C for n-Decyl alcohol.

IBC carriage requirements:

IBC chapter    17

Ship Type    2

Tank Type    2G

Relevant additional IBC requirements 15.19.6 high-level alarm

16.2.9 cargo's melting point shall be specified in the shipping document. (Applies to n-decyl alcohol only).

MARPOL Requirements:

Annex    II

Pollution Category    Y

Special information to be added to Shipping Document - Standard information

For n-Decyl alcohol: The cargo's melting point shall be indicated in the shipping document.

Stowage:

Heat adjacent 48 deg. C

Stow adjacent to fuel oil tanks Yes.

Carriage requirements:

Heating during voyage - Depending on grade of Decyl alcohol

Follow heating instructions

Heating during unloading Follow heating instructions

For n-Decyl alcohol: unloading temperature well above melting point.

Tanks inerted or padded - Not required by IBC code. Check with shipper whether nitrogen blanket is required.

Prewash required?

Prewash required if unloading temperature is less than 5 Degrees C higher than melting point (can be relevant for n-Decyl alcohol).

Tank cleaning:

Ambient temperature water wash

(Moderate/warm temperature water wash for n-Decyl alcohol due to melting point around 6 deg. C)

Warm temperature water wash

Ambient temperature freshwater rinse.

Emergency Response:

Fire: Use foam or water spray - not water jet

Spillage: Collect small spills with absorbent material. Larger spills: Try to collect and transfer to spill tank or wash away with water. When in port, - inform Port Authority

First aid: Remove victim to fresh air. Follow first aid instructions in MSDS. Consider obtaining advice from Radio Medical

Hazards (Occupational safety etc):

May be harmful if swallowed or in contact with skin. Causes mild skin irritation. Causes serious eye irritation.

Precautions

Obtain full cargo specification prior to acceptance as many isomers and grades of Decyl alcohol exist

This cargo is colour sensitive. Avoid moisture from contaminating this cargo (nitrogen blanket will often be required)

Risk of hazardous reaction with strong oxidizers such as nitric acid.

Remarks

As many isomers and grades of Decyl alcohol exist, please obtain full cargo specification prior to acceptance.

Use: Plasticizers, detergents, synthetic lubricants, solvents, perfumes, flavourings, antifoam agent.

The BIMCO Liquid Cargo Database contains information for more than 360 cargoes, all updated to the IBC Code 2021 amended requirements, but in order to ensure that the BIMCO Liquid Cargo Database information is kept updated, we highly welcome any feedback in the form of comments, response, information or data regarding a specific cargo.
